Jamaica’s emerging star, Janieve Russell threw down the gauntlet to her senior rivals in the women’s 400m hurdles winning the Rome Diamond League in a world-leading 53.96 seconds.

Russell, the 2012 World Junior champion, started a bit slow but stepped on the gas over the last 200m and although her technique wasn't the best, she destroyed a world-class field on her way to her second Diamond league victory.

Wenda Nel of South Africa stayed on well for second in a season’s best of 54.61 seconds ahead of Eilidh Doyle of Great Britain in 54.81 seconds. American Cassandra Tate was fourth with 55.35 while Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer faded into sixth with 55.51 seconds.

Russell now leads the Diamond League points standing with 20 points, six more than Doyle on 14 points. Spencer has five points.
