KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange, has reaffirmed the Government commitment towards achieving gender equality and promoting women’s rights and empowerment.

"Economic empowerment for women is critical, we have made progress over the years, but it is essential that we redouble our efforts towards achieving this goal,” Grange said during a courtesy call paid on her by United Nations Under Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director, Madame Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, in Kingston today.

The executive director is on her first official visit to Jamaica and will be participating in a celebratory walk, recognizing the Government of Jamaica’s ratification of C189, the Convention on Domestic Workers, tomorrow (November 2).

“We came here to reaffirm our partnership with the people of Jamaica, congratulating them for ratifying the Domestic Convention (C189) — an opportunity to empower women and to secure jobs for women through that convention,” said Madame Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

The celebratory walk will be held on Wednesday, November 2 at 6:30-7:30 am at Emancipation Park.

Participants will include: The National Housing Trust, Jamaica Household Workers Union and Jamaica Employer’s Federation.

The UN Women boss also congratulated Grange on Jamaica’s progress in developing legislation to address violence against women.
